Chief Diplomat Gërvalla: We enjoy broad support and are optimistic for membership in the Council of Europe

Prishtina, 13 May 2022 - The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Ms. Donika Gërvalla, today held a press conference, where she spoke on the importance and the application process in the Council of Europe where the Republic of Kosovo has applied on Thursday.

Minister Gërvalla told the press that CoE membership will be the most important step for Kosovo since its independence.

“Membership to the Council of Europe for our country will perhaps be the most important step, since its independence in 2008, on our path toward European integration. We are well prepared as we have been applying conditions and norms of the Council of Europe from the first day" added the chief of Kosovo’s diplomacy.

Kosovo's Chief Diplomat stated that she is optimistic for the Council of Europe membership, stating that the Republic of Kosovo enjoys broad support in this process.

“We are tremendously happy that we are basing our membership application on a broad political support within the Council of Europe. Therefore, we are both accountable and grateful, but also optimistic that my counterparts in the Committee of Minister on 20th of May this year will welcome our application for membership ", stated Gërvalla.

The chief diplomat added that they are aware of the volume of work that lies ahead, but that they are ready for the challenge.

“We are aware that this is only the first step on a long and challenging road to Kosovo's membership, but we are ready to work hard, with the support of all democratic states in the Council of Europe and in full coordination with partners and our allies, to achieve membership as soon as possible", added Gërvalla.

While responding to journalists' questions, Gërvalla said that Kosovo's inclusion in the family of European countries in the Council of Europe will be an important contribution to stability and finally peace in the Balkans.

“Recognizing the reality that Kosovo is an independent and sovereign state will put an end to efforts of changing borders in Southeast Europe through conflict and violence. We believe that this is the right step at the right time" Gërvalla told the reporters.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has personally submitted the application letter to the Council of Europe at the CoE Secretariat on Thursday morning.
